From Home Kitchen to Classroom: What Parks Jr. High Students Learned from a Sourdough Entrepreneur
On January 10, the Infinnovate for Education program at Parks Jr. High welcomed Sylvia Situ, founder of Sylvie Sourdough, for a special student interview and entrepreneur learning experience. For students, the visit was more than a guest speaker moment. It was a chance to meet a real small business owner, hear the story behind a growing brand, and understand how an idea can begin at home before reaching a wider community.
Sylvia’s journey started in her own kitchen. As a mother of two, she began baking sourdough because she wanted to give her family clean, wholesome bread made with care. What began as a personal mission slowly grew into something bigger. Friends asked for loaves. Family encouraged her. Community demand followed. Over time, a home kitchen became the foundation for a small business built on quality, trust, and consistency. For Park’s students, that story made entrepreneurship feel close, human, and possible.
A Business Built by Hand
Sylvie Sourdough gave students a different kind of business case study. This was not a story about a company that started with a large team, major funding, or a perfect plan. It was a story about starting small, listening to people, improving a product, and building momentum one loaf at a time.
Sylvia shared how she learned to navigate the realities of running a food business: local regulations, food safety, production limits, customer communication, and the discipline required to deliver the same level of quality again and again. Her message was simple, but powerful:
“Growth does not happen by rushing. It happens by caring about the product, understanding the customer, and staying committed to the process.”

Lessons in Entrepreneurship
Throughout the interview, students explored what it takes to turn a passion into a business. Sylvia emphasized the importance of starting small and simple. Instead of trying to offer everything at once, she focused on a few core products and improved them over time. She spoke about the value of quality, reminding students that a strong business is built on trust. If customers believe in what you make, they come back.
She also introduced students to the role of marketing in a modern small business. Platforms like Instagram helped her connect with customers, share her process, and build a recognizable presence. For students learning about entrepreneurship, this showed that a business is not only built through the product itself. It is also built through storytelling, consistency, and community connection.
Sylvia also discussed collaboration. By partnering with other small businesses, entrepreneurs can support one another, reach new audiences, and grow together. For Parks Jr. High students, these lessons connected directly to the skills Infinnovate helps students practice: creativity, communication, financial thinking, problem solving, and leadership.
